Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with French aircraft in a joint strike targeting an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be housing weapons and explosive materials, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft utilized Paveway IV guided bombs to strike a number of entry passages leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the operation on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

IS - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with allied nations, to eradicate any resurgence of IS and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the minister said.

UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS following its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their expertise and their valour," he added. "They were part of thousands of British personnel stationed over the festive period. This action, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are always on standby, all year round, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the US military carried out what it described as a "massive strike" against IS targets in the country, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The U.N. estimates Daesh still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
